This Week: Budget Vote Delayed; Council Approves Home Elevations; Houston Observes Memorial Day; Commission to Vote on Heights Design Guidelines

Budget Vote Delayed

Council discussion and the vote on the proposed City of Houston FY2019 Budget was delayed for one week at a council member’s request. The proposed $2.48 billion General Fund budget closes a $114 million deficit while avoiding layoffs and maintaining a healthy emergency fund balance in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season. Council is expected to vote on the budget on Wednesday, May 30th. FY2019 will begin on July 1, 2018.

Council Approves Home Elevations

Council voted to accept a grant award of $592,854 to elevate three flood-prone homes in District C, as part of FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The selected homeowners volunteered to participate as part of the City of Houston’s 2015 application and will be awarded 75% of the cost to elevate their homes including design, permitting, construction, and project management.

Houston Observes Memorial Day

The District C office will be closed on Monday, May 28th in observance of Memorial Day. Please note that there will be no solid waste pick-up that day. Collection schedules will be altered on Tuesday the 29th and Wednesday the 30th.

Commission to Vote on Heights Design Guidelines

On Thursday, May 31st, the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission(HAHC) will vote on the proposed Heights Historic Districts Design Guidelines. The meeting will begin at 2PM (not at 3PM, as previously advised) in the City Hall Annex Council Chambers (900 Bagby St, Public Level, 77002). Hard copies of the proposed design guidelines are available at the Heights Library reference desk. Please note that, while the meeting will be open to the public, there will be no opportunity for public comment since the Public Hearing on this issue took place on May 17th.
