Houstonians will soon have new dazzling lights above while they sit in standstill traffic along the Southwest Freeway.
Testing has been going on during the evenings lately, as many Houston commuters have reported.
The company behind the lighting project sent over some photos of the lights that have been sporadically engaged over the past few evenings.
Designed by Gandy2 Lighting Design, the dramatic, color-changing LED lights across seven bridges (Woodhead, Mandell, Dunlavy, Hazard, Graustark and two on Montrose) along the route will be turned on for the first time during the first week of February, just in time for Super Bowl LI visitors to see them.
The price tag on the project was about $2 million, with the Montrose Management District, Texas Department of Transportation and Houston-Galveston Area Council splitting the cost.
As the Houston Chronicle’s Dug Begley previously reported, the bridges were first illuminated when they were rebuilt atop US-59 as part of a freeway widening project completed in 2001. Though popular with drivers and residents in the area, the lights quickly burned out.
