District C Observes Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

Last weekend marked the commencement of the Jewish High Holy Days. The first of these is Rosh Hashanah, which began on Sunday, September 28th at sundown. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. Ten days later, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, begins at sundown on Tuesday, October 8th. Those of the Jewish faith traditionally gather in synagogue for both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and refrain from work on these holy days. In observance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the District C office was closed on Monday, September 30th and will be closed on Wednesday, October 9th.

Houston Observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Mayor Pro Tem Cohen and Mayor Turner presented a proclamation to the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC) on Tuesday, October 4th in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Joined by HAWC CEO Emily Dawn Whitehurst, Mayor Pro Tem Cohen emphasized the work they have done to drive society to acknowledge domestic violence as a problem affecting the entire community rather than simply a “women’s problem.”  In 2018, HAWC helped 1,042 adults and children shelter safely; 4,455 adults and children receive counseling; and 1,641 adults and children with court services. Houstonians interested in joining the effort to eliminate domestic violence may contact the Houston Area Women’s Center at info@hawc.org or (713) 528-6798.
