This Week: Home Elevation Grants Approved for Meyerland Flood Survivors; Upcoming Public Meeting: Flood Recovery Townhall; Sidewalk Construction for Gardenia St; Public Meeting: 2019 Major Thoroughfare and Freeway Plan
Home Elevation Grants Approved for Meyerland Flood Survivors
Mayor Pro Tem Cohen and her colleagues approved contracts with two firms, Byrdson Services, LLC dba Ecello Homes, and Planet Three Consulting Corp, for the elevation of two flood-prone homes in District C’s greater Meyerland neighborhood.
In addition, Council extended the length of the existing contract for two previously-approved homes. Unfortunately, their former contractor, Titan Foundations and Elevations, went out of business while under contract and did not complete the work. The extention will allow for these homeowners to continue to move forward with new contractors.
All four homes on this week’s agenda are participants in the FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance Program. The City of Houston, in partnership with the Texas Water Development Board, submits annual applications to compete nationwide for these federal grant funds to reduce the risk of flooding for single-family homes by elevation.
Upcoming Public Meeting: Flood Recovery Townhall
Sidewalk Construction for Gardenia St
The Houston Public Works Department will soon begin construction on Gardenia St in District C’s Oak Forest neighborhood, between Rosslyn Rd and Ella Blvd, to build a new sidewalk along the south side of the street. The project is expected to be complete within two months.
Public Meeting: 2019 Major Thoroughfare and Freeway Plan
On Thursday, August 29th, the Houston Planning Commission will host a public hearing to review and vote on proposed amendments to the 2019 Major Thoroughfare and Freeway Plan. This annually-reviewed document identifies the widths, speed limits, and building setbacks of Houston’s streets. The meeting will begin at 2:30PM in City Hall Annex Chambers (900 Bagby St, Public Level, 77002).
The 2019 MTFP will then move to City Council for a vote in September. All Planning Commission meetings are open to the public, include the opportunity for public comment, and are streamed and archived online via HTV.
