Please join our Monday September 21st meeting on a very critical topic. We are going to have a teach-in on HERO- the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance-which faces referendum on the ballot this November. Meyerland Area Democrats formally supports this landmark ordinance and is committed to its passage.
There is a great deal of misleading information on this ordinance that is being used by its opponents. This teach-in will show us how to explain HERO to family, friends and fellow voters.
Three leaders will contribute to this event: Councilwoman Ellen Cohen; Fran Watson, Vice President of the GLBT Caucus and civil rights activist; and Brad Pritchett of the ACLU.
Councilwoman Ellen Cohen of District C will provide us with some talking points for our neighborhood and show us how critical HERO is all Houstonians.
Fran Watson will give us insight into HERO’s positive impact on minorities as well as the LGBT community. She is a licensed attorney and certified mediator whose practice focuses on estate planning, estate administration, and commercial disputes.
A native Houstonian who desires to serve the needs of her community, Fran is an active volunteer for various LGBT organizations and events in and around Houston. She serves as the vice-president of Stonewall Law Association of Greater Houston, an association of legal professionals whose objectives are to provide an LGBT presence in the community while promoting the study of LGBT and HIV law. She is also the current vice-president and volunteer coordinator for the Houston GLBT Political Caucus, the South’s oldest civil rights organization dedicated to advancing gay and transgender rights through the endorsement of pro-equality political candidates.
Brad Pritchett of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will give us a brief course on HERO showing us how to talk about it to friends, neighbors and other voters.
Come early for dinner at 6:15 p.m. and the meeting starts PROMPTLY at 7 p.m. There is no charge to attend, but attendees pay for their own food and drinks. We meet at Fadi’s Grill, 4738 Beechnut Houston Tx 77096!
See You There,
Art Pronin
